David Ferrer did not manage to hold Rafael Nadal back as the 17-time Grand Slam winner eased past the 37-year-old to qualify for the Barcelona Openquarter-finals.
Nadal beat Ferrer 6-3, 6-3 in a game that had to be paused for 50 minutes due to heavy rain.
Unlike his first game against Leonardo Mayer, the 32-year-old Mallorcan dominated against his compatriot and, although he did not win the first set comfortably, he improved during the game.
This was the 26th time that Nadal has beaten Ferrer in the 32 games between them.
Nadal will face the winner of the match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jan-Lennard Struff in the last eight of the Open.
For Ferrer, he was playing in his penultimate tournament before retiring at next month’s Madrid Masters. In his career, he has won 27 titles in his 19-year career.
