The Duchess of Sussex flew to New York to watch her friend Serena Williams play in the US Open final over the weekend.

Williams was beaten 6-3, 7-5 by 19-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu, making it the third time the player has lost a match while Meghan Markle watched from the stands.

Fans of the tennis star have shared a bizarre theory on Twitter in the aftermath of Williams’ defeat — and they’re blaming Markle.

“Anyone else thinking Meghan Markle might be a jinx for Serena…” one fan wrote.

Another said: “So far in 3 finals #MeghanMarkle was there and #SerenaWilliams lost… maybe it’s better if she stays home.”

Another fan joked that Markle was a “great friend” but a “bad omen.”

“If you value your friendship & knowing you are jinxed… should stay away!” another fan tweeted.

A source close to Williams told Page Six that her coach had been “superstitious” surrounding Markle’s appearances at her matches.

“Serena asked her coach about Meghan coming when she won last night and everyone is worried, as tennis players are very superstitious, and Serena lost when Meghan came to watch her at Wimbledon,” the source said on Friday.

However, Williams hasn’t been shy about speaking on her friendship with the royal. During a post-match interview at Wimbledon in July, she said Markle “couldn’t be a better friend to me.”

“Low moments, high moments, she’s always there,” said Williams. “That’s all I want to be to her.”

Nonetheless, Markle isn’t the first celebrity to be accused of being bad luck.

Some fans believed rapper Drake “jinxed” Williams when he watched her play back when they were rumoured to be dating in 2015. However, she wasn’t the only athlete or team who tended to lose after Drake watched from the audience, leading people to nickname it the “Drake curse.”

He finally seemed to break his unlucky spell after his favorite team, the Toronto Raptors, won their first NBA championship earlier this year.

Markle’s visit to the US Open marked her first solo trip abroad since giving birth to Archie in May.

It appeared the newborn — and her husband — were on her mind, though, as she wore a necklace with their initials on it for the event.

She also wore a $175 denim dress from J Crew, with her hair in loose waves and natural makeup to complete the look.
